Do Ear Cuffs Hurt? A Comfort & Fit Guide

Unlike clip-on earrings that rely on pressure to stay in place, an ear cuff can sit securely within the natural structure of your ear. This is why finding the right position is one of the most important parts of achieving a comfortable fit.

Why Can an Ear Cuff Feel Uncomfortable?

If an ear cuff feels uncomfortable, it does not necessarily mean that ear cuffs are not suitable for you. Often, a small change in position is all that is needed.

1. The Position May Need Adjusting

Everyone's ear shape and cartilage structure are slightly different.

We generally recommend wearing your ear cuff around the inner curve of the ear. Here, the natural structure of the cartilage allows the cuff to sit securely in place without relying on pressure.

If the cuff does not feel natural, try moving it slightly higher or lower until you find a position where it comfortably settles into the contour of your ear.

2. The Opening May Need a Small Adjustment

Most 90Ninety’s ear cuffs are designed to suit common cartilage thickness and our recommended inner-ear placement, so extensive adjustment should not normally be necessary.

If your ear cuff is an adjustable design, however, you can gently adjust the opening when needed to suit your individual ear shape or preferred placement.

The goal is not to make the cuff tighter, but to help it sit naturally and comfortably in the right position.

3. You May Still Be Getting Used to It

If you do not normally wear jewellery around your ear cartilage, you may notice the presence of an ear cuff more when you first try one.

A comfortable ear cuff may still feel noticeable at first, but it should not cause persistent pain, numbness or significant discomfort.

What Should a Comfortable Ear Cuff Feel Like?

A well-positioned ear cuff should feel secure, balanced and natural.

• It should follow the natural contour of your ear;
• It should remain comfortably in position during normal wear;
• It should not create excessive pressure;
• It should feel naturally secure rather than tightly clamped.

If something does not feel quite right, try repositioning the cuff first. A small difference in placement can make a surprisingly noticeable difference in comfort.

Can I Wear an Ear Cuff Higher on My Ear?

Yes. While we generally recommend the inner curve of the ear for a naturally secure and comfortable fit, you can also style your ear cuff higher along the upper cartilage.

For a higher placement, selected adjustable designs can be gently adjusted according to the shape and thickness of that part of your ear.

This gives you the freedom to experiment with different positions and create a look that feels uniquely yours.

Can You Wear Ear Cuffs All Day?

If your ear cuff is comfortably positioned and suits your ear shape, it can easily become part of your everyday jewellery.

Everyone's ears are slightly different, so if you notice discomfort after extended wear, simply remove the cuff and give your ear a break.

We also recommend removing your ear cuff before sleeping, showering, swimming or exercising to help care for both your jewellery and your ear.
