How to Wear an Ear Cuff: A Beginner’s Guide

Ear cuffs let you style your ears without the need for a piercing. Simply slide one on, find the right position, and let the natural contour of your ear help hold it securely in place.

If you are wearing an ear cuff for the first time, this guide will show you how to put it on, find the recommended position, check the fit, and remove it comfortably.

What Is an Ear Cuff?

An ear cuff is a piece of jewellery designed to sit around the cartilage of your ear without requiring a piercing.

Unlike traditional earrings, it does not require an earring post or backing. Instead, the cuff slides onto the ear and sits securely along its natural contours.

You can wear an ear cuff on its own or combine it with your existing earrings to create different looks and ear stacks.

How to Put On an Ear Cuff

Step 1 — Start at the Thinner Part of Your Ear

Begin at a thinner section along the outer edge of your ear. Gently slide the opening of the ear cuff over the cartilage.

Starting from a thinner area allows the cuff to slide onto the ear more easily and comfortably.

Step 2 — Slide the Ear Cuff Into Position

Once the cuff is on your ear, gently move it along the cartilage toward your preferred position.

There is no need to push the cuff directly onto the final position. Simply let it follow the natural curve of your ear as you move it into place.

Step 3 — Find the Recommended Inner-Ear Position

For a secure and comfortable fit, we generally recommend positioning your ear cuff around the inner curve of the ear.

At this position, the natural structure of the cartilage helps hold the cuff securely in place. Rather than relying on pressure to stay on your ear, the cuff sits naturally within the contours of the cartilage.

Every ear shape is slightly different, so you can move the cuff a little higher or lower until you find the position where it naturally settles.

Step 4 — Check the Fit

90Ninety’s ear cuffs are generally designed with an opening of approximately 4mm, based on common cartilage thickness and our recommended inner-ear placement.

Once positioned around the inner curve of the ear, the natural structure of the cartilage helps keep the cuff securely in place without needing to clamp tightly onto your ear.

As every ear shape varies slightly, selected adjustable designs can be gently adjusted when needed. Avoid repeatedly bending or excessively opening the cuff, as this may affect its original shape over time.

How Should an Ear Cuff Fit?

A well-positioned ear cuff should feel secure, natural and comfortable.

  • It should sit naturally within the contour of your ear;
  • It should remain comfortably in position during normal wear;
  • It should not create excessive pressure;
  • It should feel secure without needing to clamp tightly onto your ear.

The key is finding the natural position where the ear cuff sits securely around the cartilage, rather than relying on pressure to hold it in place.

Can I Wear an Ear Cuff Higher on My Ear?

Yes. While we recommend the inner curve of the ear for a naturally secure and comfortable fit, ear cuffs can also be styled higher along the upper cartilage for a different look.

If you prefer a higher placement, selected adjustable designs can be gently adjusted according to the shape and thickness of that part of your ear.

Experimenting with different positions is part of what makes ear cuffs so versatile. Even a small change in placement can create a noticeably different look.

How to Remove an Ear Cuff

To remove your ear cuff, gently slide it back along the cartilage toward the thinner section of your ear where you originally put it on.

Once it reaches the thinner edge, carefully slide the cuff off.

Avoid pulling the cuff directly away from your ear. Following the natural curve of the ear makes removal easier and more comfortable.

Finding Your Perfect Position

Every ear is shaped slightly differently, so your ideal placement may be different from someone else's.

Start with the inner curve of the ear as the recommended position, then experiment with subtle changes in placement to discover what feels and looks best on you.

Wear one on its own for a minimal look, combine it with pierced earrings for added dimension, or stack multiple cuffs to create your own ear composition.

No piercing. No pressure. Wear it your way.
